Reps. Jan Schakowsky (IL), Ed Markey (MA) and Tammy Baldwin (WI) introduced legislation that would toughen safety standards for cosmetics and give the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to check personal care products for harmful ingredients.  Current law allows the FDA to defer decisions about ingredient safety to the cosmetic industry.  In other words, the cosmetic industry is regulating itself.  According to the Campaign for Safe cosmetics,  provisions in the legislation will:

  • Phase out ingredients linked to cancer, birth defects and developmental harm;
  • Create a health-based safety standard that includes protections for vulnerable populations, like children;
  • Close labeling loopholes by requiring full ingredient disclosure on product labels, web sites;
  • Give workers access to information about unsafe chemicals in personal care products;
  • Require data-sharing to avoid duplicative testing;
  • Provide funding to the FDA so it has the resources it needs to provided effective oversight; and
  • Level the playing field so small businesses can compete fairly.

Editor's Note:   As of November 2012  this bill has not passed yet.

I don't think giving the FDA more funding will make sure they do a better job. They approve so many dangerous chemicals for cosmetics that I now have a tough trusting the label that reads "FDA approved".

Great article, I was never aware make up and other cosmetics could contain harmful ingredients that can cause cancer and birth defects. It's amazing what people will do to make money now days, no consideration for the well being of people, anyways I am happy to see there are regulations being put out there!

It would perhaps not, nonetheless, get rid of the use of certain chemicals of concern nor require full disclosure of cosmetic ingredients. Also on the dining table now could be a proposal written by the Personal Care Products Council, a trade group representing the cosmetics industry (members include the Estee Lauder Organizations, L'Oreal USA, and Procter & Gamble Cosmetics, among many others), which aims to have the FDA codify into law the ingredient safety choices made by the Council's own Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel.

Long overdue, but I can't help wondering where the money to comply with these regs will come from. I see extremely expensive cosmetics and many more naked faces in our future.

Nice this blog is really good. It would let woman become much aware about cosmetics product. I know beauty is such an essential part for woman, but they should be most concern of their health first.

I always knew that some of cosmetic contents had mercury or any harmful ingredients that could really destroy our skin.

it's sad that these products are still being mass produced with all the harmful effects on us. Thanks for the post!!
