Your Support is Needed to Advance Women’s Health Research and Care

The Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI) at Northwestern University is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to the advancement of women’s health research. Since its inception in 2007, the WHRI has served as a catalyst for interdisciplinary basic science, translational, and clinical research that impacts the overall health and well-being of women, which is reflected in our motto, Science to Care

The mission of the WHRI is to increase the research and education portfolio on women’s health across every organ system at Northwestern University and its clinical partners. Through this expansion, the WHRI strives to make Northwestern a model of sex-inclusive research for institutions nationwide. In the past 10 years, the WHRI has:

  • Improved awareness that sex matters in biomedical and clinical research through educational programs and outreach;
  • Increased funding for sex-based research;
  • Created “Sex Inclusion at Northwestern,” an online “how-to” tool kit for researchers;
  • Established the Illinois Women’s Health Registry to increase women’s participation in clinical research; and
  • Influenced the creation of the 2016 National Institutes of Health policy, which requires investigators to consider sex as a biological variable in government-funded research.

The WHRI is at a critical juncture as we continue our aggressive agenda. The initial start-up funds we received have set us on an exciting course, and today we have well-established programs that are truly changing the face of women’s health research at Northwestern University and across the nation.

With philanthropic support and guidance from our cross disciplinary Leadership Council, we will reach our ultimate goal—to study every disease area with females being fully represented in each phase of drug creation. When this happens, the women in our lives that we so deeply love—our mothers, daughters, aunts, granddaughters, and friends—will live healthier and longer lives. Northwestern University will be the nation’s epicenter for women’s health research.
